SPF & Makeup: Tips for reapplication
So you want to protect your skin from the suns harmful and ageing UV rays, but you also want to wear makeup, so how on earth do you really without looking like some wild abstract painting?
Today we're diving into the world of SPF and makeup, exploring the wonderful ways you can shield your skin from UV rays without compromising your flawless makeup look.
1. Start with a Good SPF Base:
The SPF in foundation is insufficient as your main SPF protection, so it’s really important you use a dedicated facial SPF before you begin your makeup routine. While foundation with SPF can offer some sun protection, it is often insufficient for extended sun exposure. The SPF strength in foundation is typically lower, ranging from SPF 15 to SPF 30, which may not provide adequate defense against intense UV rays or prolonged time outdoors. Additionally, foundation is usually applied in smaller quantities than sunscreen, resulting in diluted protection and uneven coverage. If you prefer a more natural makeup look then why not opt for a tinted SPF rather than a foundation? My personal favourites are Heliocare gel cream and Obagi SunShield and Cliniccare Dermo Correcrice Cream (both available only on clinic or after virtual skincare consultation.
2. SPF Setting Sprays
SPF facial mists are a brilliant solution. These misty marvels not only hydrate your skin but also deliver a veil of sun protection, they can be easily reapplied over makeup but probably aren’t the best option for those of you who wear eyelash extensions. There are options from Heliocare, Supergoop! & Ultrasun all with factor 50, shop them here.
3. SPF Compacts:
SPF cushion compacts are a great on the go option. These convenient compacts combine the benefits of a foundation and sunscreen in one easy-to-use package. Take a look at the Heliocare and Skinbetter Science options available in clinic or after a virtual skincare consultation with me.
4. SPF Powder:
Another great option to top off your makeup especially for those of you who wear powdered makeup products is SPF powder. This easy-to-use product can be brushed onto the skin for a matte finish while keeping harmful UV rays at bay. A standout choice is the ZO Sunscreen & Powder SPF 45 (available in clinic) plus these choices online.
5. Liquid SPF with a Sponge:
For those who prefer liquid sunscreen, applying it over makeup can be a challenge. However, fear not! There's a solution that ensures sun protection without disturbing your carefully crafted look. Apply your liquid SPF with a sponge applicator. Simply pop your favourite clear facial SPF onto the back of your hand and apply carefully over makeup.
SPF application need not be a hassle or a makeup-wrecker. With a good SPF base and the versatility of SPF products we have available to us, you can embrace the sunshine while keeping your skin safeguarded and your makeup flawless.
As one glamorous woman once said, protect your skin, it’s going to represent you for a long time!
*Disclaimer: While SPF products are great for sun protection, it's essential to follow the directions on the packaging, reapply as needed, and incorporate other sun-safe practices like seeking shade and wearing protective clothing.*
